CATEDRAL
‘Catedral' presents a conversation between the human body and a historic building. The featured event was curated by architect Dolores Victoria Ruiz Garrido as a public performance for the European Heritage Days in the Andalucian province of Jaén. However, because of Covid19 restrictions, the event was conducted without live audience and filmed instead during the early hours of an autumnal Sunday. The dance piece explores the most relevant piece of Jaén’s heritage, the enormous Unesco listed Renaissance cathedral, through the fragility of human body and contemporary dance. The film, as a work of art in its own right, presents the action with the object and its context while adding a new layer to the arts project. The performance by three dancers of MarCat Dance was partly improvised and the choreography was matched to respond to music composed for the cathedral by its 18th century conductor, Juan Manuel de la Puente. Created as part of European Heritage week and supported by the Regional Government of Andalucia and The City of Jaén.
